Information System Strategy

Good afternoon good peeps^^ So here I am on the 5th week of my lecturer session in MIS subject, I learn about the strategy in the Information System itself. Without any further do let's get started!!

According to O'Brien (2005), the strategic role of information systems in organizations is to improve operating efficiency, increase organizational innovation and build strategic information resources. These three strategic roles can support the organization in increasing competitive advantage in competing. In a non-profit organization, the strategic role in question is to improve efficiency in the execution of work and improve performance in service activities.

The information system applied by the company to support its strategy can also be used to see business trends in the future. With the existence of an information system, the company can anticipate changes that may occur in the short, medium and long term due to changes in business orientation. In addition, a superior information system will create barriers to entry for competitors because of the complexity of technology to enter market competition.

From the internal side of the company, the use of information systems will not only improve the quality and speed of information produced for management, but also can create a management information system that is able to improve integration in the information sector and operations among various parties in the company. This system can work well if all processes are supported by high technology, quality resources, and the most important is the company's commitment. Information systems generally have several roles in the company, including the following

1. Minimize Risk

Every business has risks, especially related to financial factors. In general, the risk comes from uncertainty in various things and other external aspects that are outside the control of the company. Currently various types of applications are available to reduce the risks often faced by businesses, such as forecasting, financial advisory, planning experts, and others. In addition, the presence of information technology is a means for management in managing the risks faced.

2. Reduce Cost

The role of information technology as a catalyst in various efforts to reduce the company's operational costs will affect the company's profitability. There are four ways to reduce operational costs through the application of information systems, namely eliminating unnecessary processes, simplifying processes, integrating processes so that they are faster and more practical, and process automation.

3. Added Value

Information technology can create value for corporate customers. Value creation is not only to satisfy customers, but also to create customer loyalty in the long run.

4. Create New Realities

The rapid development of internet technology has resulted in a new arena of competition for companies in cyberspace. This is shown by the widespread use of e-commerce, e-loyalty, e-customers, and others in responding to business mechanisms in the era of information globalization.

Information Technology Impact to the Business

In the business world, information technology has a real influence, business transactions are recorded online, processed and at the same time the results of processing or information can be seen, as is commonly done by bank customers when conducting transactions at ATMs (automated teller machines). At this time information is very important in business activities, with the support of information technology, information is increasingly easily obtained without being limited by time and space. The role of information technology (IT) in an effort to integrate all business processes is not exactly small. Various application solutions can be utilized by the company to realize this effort. In terms of employees, human resource management solutions (HRM), enable the creation of effective human resources, and relatively accurate administrative controls. Human Resources in the company can work more optimally and produce high performance for the company. For customers, companies can use Selling Chain Management. This solution allows companies to carry out marketing, sales and customer service activities simultaneously to produce output in the form of utilizing Customer Relationship Management (CRM) applications. For suppliers, companies can take advantage of Supply Chain Management solutions that combine logistics, production and distribution activities in the same direction. Supported by strong business intelligence and integrated enterprise applications, Enterprise Resources Planning (ERP) application solutions, generate financial reports whose results can be read by the company's shareholders.

Global E-Business and Collaboration

So, in the 2nd week I've learned about Global E-Business and Collaboration. The thing that I want to emphasize is in order to operate, businesses must deal with many different pieces of information about suppliers, customers, employees, invoices and payments, and of course their products and services. Business processes are the collection of activities required to produce a product or service. These activities are flows of material, information, and knowledge among the participants in business processes. Today, information technology can do much more. New technology can actually change the flow of information, making it possible for many more people to access and share information, replacing sequential steps with tasks that can be performed simultaneously, and eliminating delays in decision making. New information technology frequently changes the way in business works and supports entirely new business models. A typical business organization has systems supporting processes for each of the major business functions - systems for sales and marketing, manufacturing and production, finance and accounting, and human resources. It also has different systems supporting the decision-making needs of each of the main management groups.

In all but the smallest of firms, the information systems department is the formal organizational unit responsible for information technology services. It is responsible for maintaining the hardware, software, data storage, and networks that comprise the firm's IT infrastructure. The information systems department consists of specialists, such as programmers, systems analysts, project leaders, and information systems managers and is managed by chief information officer (CIO).

The benefit from Social Business and Collaboration which are 1) increasing in productivity such as the quality and the innovative of product and service, 2) increasing sales and profit. The tools that we need to use usually are E-mail, Internet, Video Conf., Wiki, Sharepoint, Dropbox, IBM Lotus, etc. Also there are Chatter, Microsoft, IBM Connections and Jive as the software. And who do you guys thinks that manages it all? The answer is MIS Department which are the programmer and system analyst.

Introduction to MIS

Halo guys! It's been a year since I posted something on this Blog. So this time, I got Management Information System as my Subject in 7th semester. On top of that, once a week in 4 months ahead, I will share to you guys about what I've learnt from MIS itself.

So, for the first time let's jump into the Introduction. MIS or Management Information System is tools to gather and analyst information from networks. It has relations with these 3 keywords which are Organization, Management and Technology. MIS has 3 process which are 1) Data Gathering 2) Data Processing 3) Get the Information (after point 1 and 2 are done). After that, the results from the process itself are new idea/product, analyzing cost and increasing cost. How MIS can help us?
